PlexConnect Overview and IntroductionPlexConnect introduction I am creating this blog for all of those of you out there, who have an understanding of Plex for windows mac etc and own an Apple Tv 2 or 3. Plex simply put is just another HTPC server program. It has clyant applications for many OSs but that will be for a later post. I feel that the ATV can be so much more than what apple will allow. Its fine if you only have Apple approved content on your PC that you want to watch, but what about those thousands of hours of TV shows movies / home movies that you have on your pc already? Here's where PlexConnect steps in to fill that gap. To be able to follow any of the next posts you will need the following programs installed on your computer. As for the ATV 2 or 3, no new applications will need to be installed, no jailbreak will be needed, only a few minor settings tweaks to get up and running. None of these applications are optional and will all be needed in their own time. Don't post a reply saying it didn't work because you forgot to install a program or installed the incorrect version. Lets get started: 1. Plex Media Server, the latest version is fine. http://www.plexapp.com/desktop/ (guides on usage can be found using google, or their forums.) Get this installed and all set up before you move on. 2. Win32 OpenSSL v1.0.1e Needed now since Apple has gone to SSL encryption. make sure you download exactly as written, other versions will not work. This is only needed for users on Windows, if you are on a Mac you can skip this step. http://slproweb.com/products/Win32OpenSSL.html Make sure to also download Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributables for Windows. 3. Python 2.x series with 2.7 being the minimum (Python 3.x is not supported) for both Mac and PC. http://www.python.org/download/releases/2.7.5/ 4. Apple Configurator for Mac / iPhone Configuration Utility if older than version Mac 10.6 OS. iPhone Configuration Utility for windows found here. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1466 Steps will stay basically the same for both. Come back to this page for the next steps once all of these have been installed.
